OVERVIEW:
Main access canal connecting the inland waterways and 120 interconnected lakes of
the south-central and SE part of Finland.
The length on the Finnish side of the border is 12.6 n.m. and on the Russian side
10.6 n.m. Overall length 23.2 n.m. The average difference in height between Lake Saimaa
and the Gulf of Finland is 75.6 m.
The canal has eight locks; the heights of fall range between 5.54 m. and 12.69 m.
All locks can accommodate the same max. size of vessel. Road transport uses the seven
bascule bridges and the six stationary bridges that cross the canal.

The canal begins near Lappeenranta, Finland and ends in Vyborg, Russia, connecting
Lake Saimaa and the Vyborg…
