OVERVIEW:  Coastal port with commercial facilities for petroleum, bulk sugar and grain, molasses, scrap metal, breakbulk cargo, LPG and chemicals. Mackay region is the largest sugar producing area in Australia and has one of the world’s largest bulk sugar terminals. The port of Mackay is Queenland's fourth busiest multi-commodity port in terms of cargo throughput.
The port includes a 479-berth marina for leisure craft. Growth in the Mackay region is not only a result of the mining industry boom in the Bowen Basin, but strong growth in agriculture and tourism.
LOCATION:  East coast of Australia, 3 n.m. north of the mouth of the Pioneer River, 185 n.m. south of Townsville.
