A natural harbour, Izmir port is divided into several sections: outer harbour, middle harbour, inner harbour, and an explosives anchorage. The inner harbour has two primary port facilities: Old Port, which is sheltered by a breakwater, and Alsancak.

Port handles dry and liquid bulk, general cargo, containers and Ro-Ro traffic.
